Founders of Square Yards, Tanuj Shori and Kanika Gupta Shori, have laid the foundation of a robust organization on the foundations of hard work, commitment and an unfaltering focus on transparency and execution. Driven to excellence in competitive years, thanks to his modest upbringing, Tanuj Shori emerged to be one of the youngest Executive Directors at Nomura after his MBA from IIM Lucknow. Kanika Gupta Shori, a Wharton alumnus, his wife and co-founder, at that stage was returning to mainstream following a maternity break. Once she started managing the duo’s personal investment portfolio, the couple realized that property buying in India involves a complicated, challenging, and largely faulty process. Though it is one of the biggest investments of an individual’s life, it is largely driven by perception and social factors, minus any science to it. Thus, the foundation of Square Yards was laid by the couple, and before they knew it, they had built a team of 100 people in just over 3 months.
The couple believes that it is their holistic approach that has catapulted the company to such enormous success. After all, this isn an industry where the entire value chain needs to be in place- how developers operate, how the purchase are perceived by the consumers, how distribution process needs to evolve, how to rope in the brightest talents on board with the assurance that this is a long-term career, option, and so on. having adopted such a holistic approach, Square Yards, over the course of time, grew in leaps and bounds, to emerge as the largest proptech player in the country. It boasts of a team comprising 2000 people, presence in more than 30 cities, a unique integrated model, and largest lead generation capability in the primary under construction market.
Besides, Square Yards is now RERA registered in 10 states, being the only player in the country to have such broad-based compliance in place. According to Tanuj, the key pillars to this ability to scale have been people and tech. He holds the belief that tech and automation play a significant role even in today’s times, which will continue to evolve. Tanuj also emphasizes that businesses should not be built o cater to market trends. On the contrary, they should aim to stay ahead of the times and add value at various nodes to stay relevant. One can make money only if stakeholders in the value chain need you, and in this particular case, the stakeholders include consumers, developers, brokers, and banks.
